Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research was established in 1823 when a medical school called Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery was established by French Government. Later, on 13th July 1964, the college was upgraded as a Regional Centre and was re-named as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). The institute is affiliated to Puducherry University and conducts a number of medical and paramedical courses. Admission to the courses is made on all India bases and strictly on the basis of merit through entrance examinations.
